Files Explained: Escape Jeff's Currency and How to Earn It
Files are Escape Jeff's in-game currency — the folders you collect while running. The name is a wink at the game's premise: Jeff is grabbing his files and getting off this island. You earn Files by playing, and you spend them in the shop on new characters. Everything in the game can be earned by playing; paying is always optional.
How you earn Files
- Collect them on the track. File folders float along all three lanes, often in trails. Run through them to collect.
- Run farther. Longer runs naturally pass more Files — distance and earnings rise together. The payout for each run is validated server-side, so the wallet you see is the wallet you have.
- Use the magnet. The magnet power-up pulls nearby Files in automatically. Magnet time is the most File-dense part of any run — run a safe line and let it work.
One important caveat: guest runs don't earn Files. The wallet needs an account to live in. A free account takes seconds and keeps your balance across devices — see getting started.
The biggest earning mistake
Risky detours. A two-swipe excursion for a short File trail is worth a handful of Files; crashing 800 meters earlier than you would have costs you hundreds. The math always favors survival: distance first, collection second. If you internalize one line from this guide, make it that one. (The high-score guide makes the same argument from the score side.)
What Files buy
The shop has two sections:
- Characters. Donny, Stevie, and future additions can each be unlocked with Files. Characters are cosmetic — same speed, same physics — so the leaderboard stays fair (details in the characters guide).
- Files & Upgrades. Optional real-money items: Files packs for players who want an unlock now rather than in a few evenings, and a one-time Remove Ads purchase.
How the real-money side works
Escape Jeff is free, and the paid options are deliberately simple:
- Everything is one-time. There are no subscriptions, no energy systems, no daily paywalls.
- Prices are shown upfront on each shop card, and every purchase shows a confirmation popup with exactly what you get and the price before anything is charged.
- Payment runs through Stripe, a major payment provider — the game never sees your card details.
- Nothing paid affects gameplay. A purchased character runs exactly as fast as an earned one.
How long does a character unlock take by playing?
It depends on your skill curve — Files scale with distance, so improving at the game is also the fastest way to get richer. For a typical new player, a character unlock is an achievable medium-term goal: a few evenings of casual runs, much faster once magnets and longer distances kick in. Players who enjoy the grind treat the unlock as the victory lap of getting better.
Files FAQ
Do Files expire or reset?
No. Your wallet persists on your account until you spend it.
Can I transfer Files to another player?
No — wallets are personal, which keeps the economy and the leaderboard clean.
I bought something and it didn't show up — what now?
Purchases are delivered instantly in almost all cases. If something looks stuck, restart the game first (your purchase is tied to your account, not the session). Still missing? Contact support via the email in the legal notice — every purchase is logged and can be checked.
